Access Software, which recently acquired PalmSource, is making bold claims stating a goal of 30% marketshare in the mobile OS software arena by 2010. Currently the market is dominated by Symbian, largely in part due to the backing of Nokia, their primary shareholder. Currently, Access holds 4% marketshare through its acquisition of PalmSource.
Access is seeking to create a PalmOS compatible platform to run on multiple mobile devices such as the Treo smartphone. Their primary goals revolve around packaging the OS with their mobile browser, NetFront. NetFront has gained wide popularity in Asia but has not yet caught on in the United States. More details can be found in a market article over at the International Herald Tribune.
Considering the recent pressure exerted by Palm on PalmSource over their next generation Palm OS, it would seem Access is certainly in need of pushing their development schedule up and releasing a compelling product. Their primary market share thus far depends almost entirely on Palm and their devices.
